This Privacy Policy is for the mobile application SumsItUp (the “App”) and is designed to explain how we collect, use, share, and protect the personal information we obtain from users. The terms “we,” “us,” and “our” refer to the App’s developers and associated personnel.
DATA COLLECTION AND USE
We collect data that users voluntarily provide and data generated when they use our services. Depending on what a user inputs into our systems, this data can include information like the device ID or the user’s IP address. We use this information to provide and improve our services, troubleshoot, communicate with users, and comply with our legal obligations. Our application does not currently use a login system nor will it prompt users to enter personally identifiable information (PII) such as email address, phone number or name; however, when sharing URLs with our App, those URLs may contain such information – we do not harvest the URLs for any such data.
DATA SHARING AND THIRD-PARTY PROVIDERS
We may share user data with third-party service providers to help us provide our service. These providers include but are not limited to:
OpenAI API: We use OpenAI API to provide some of the functionality of our service. The use of this service is subject to OpenAI’s API Data Usage Policy, which can be found at: https://openai.com/policies/api-data-usage-policies
CloudFlare: We use CloudFlare services for various functionalities, including caching and logging, and we are subject to their privacy policy, which can be found at: https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy
Google AdMob, Firebase & Analytics: Our app utilizes Google AdMob for serving ads, and Google Firebase & Analytics for app analytics & troubleshooting. The use of these services is subject to Google’s Privacy Policy, which can be found at: https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites
Listnr.tech: When a user requests the audio of a summary, we send the text of the summary to Listnr.tech for Text-to-Speech (TTS) conversion. The use of this service is subject to Listnr.tech’s Terms of Service (https://listnr.tech/terms-of-service) and Privacy Policy (https://listnr.tech/privacy-policy).
LOGGING AND CACHING
We log and cache certain information about the usage of our app, SumsItUp, to improve the user experience and for troubleshooting and analytics purposes. The specific data we collect includes:
The text or URL submitted for summarization
The resolved URL after following any redirects (if a URL was provided)
The summary format, length, and language requested
The summary returned from the OpenAI API
The browser’s user-agent string
The user’s IP address
However, we want to make it clear that this information is collected and processed in a way that respects your privacy:
IP addresses: We do store IP addresses for a limited period for the purpose of maintaining our service’s security and integrity.
URLs: We do store the URLs submitted for summarization and the final URL after any redirects.
Directly Entered Text: We temporarily store the text submitted for summarization for a limited period to provide, maintain, and improve our services. The text is automatically deleted after this period.
We cache responses from the OpenAI API to improve performance and reduce the number of requests made to the API. Cached data includes the request parameters (such as the text or URL, language, format, summary length, and modifiers) and the summary returned by the API. Cache entries are stored for a certain period, after which they are automatically deleted.
Please note that OpenAI, our AI provider, also maintains its own logging and caching systems. According to OpenAI’s data usage policy, they retain personal data sent via the API for 30 days but do not use the data sent via the API to improve their models.
CHANGES TO THE SERVICE AND POLICY UPDATES
As we continue to develop and add new features to our service, often via third-party APIs, there may be additional corresponding terms, conditions, disclaimers, and privacy implications. We reserve the right to update this Privacy Policy to reflect these changes. It is the users’ responsibility to check this Privacy Policy for any changes. By continuing to use our service after such changes, you agree to the updated Privacy Policy.
Consent and Opt-Out
By using the SumsItUp App, users agree to the terms set forth in this Privacy Policy. If a user does not agree with this policy, they are advised to discontinue the use of the App.
Data Retention
We retain the collected data for a period of 180 days. This period allows us to ensure the quality of our service and comply with any legal obligations.
Data Security
The security of your data is of paramount importance to us. We employ robust measures to ensure the protection of your data both while in transit and at rest. Specifically, we leverage CloudFlare’s data security features which include:
- Encryption at Rest: All data stored in R2, including metadata, is encrypted using the industry-standard AES-256 algorithm. This encryption is automatic, requiring no user configuration, and does not affect the performance of the service1.
- Encryption in Transit: Data exchanged between the user and R2 is safeguarded using Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL), the same level of protection afforded to all Cloudflare domains. Furthermore, plaintext HTTP can be disabled, ensuring that data is always transmitted securely1.
- Compliance Certifications: Cloudflare adheres to various industry-standard security compliance certifications, ensuring a high level of data security. More information about Cloudflare’s compliance can be found on their Trust Hub at https://developers.cloudflare.com/r2/reference/data-security/
By utilizing the Cloudflare services, we strive to maintain a secure environment for your data at all times.
Children’s Privacy
Our App is designed for users who are 13 years of age or older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13.
International Data Transfers
All our data processing and storage facilities are located in the United States, and by using our service, users agree to the transfer and processing of their data within the United States.
User Access and Correction
Users have the ability to save and delete Custom Styles through the Settings section of the App. These styles are stored locally on the user’s device within UserDefaults and can be managed by the user at any time.
